Hi guys! You heard right! I'm taking on an enormous granny square blanket! 90"x100" total to be exact! This beautiful (yet intimidating) project is a wedding gift for my sister. I'm using this pattern from HaakmaarraakNL on Etsy. Photo by HaakmaarraakNL I am using the recommended yarn Sheepjes Color Crafter from Jimmy Beans Wool. It's a durable acrylic yarn that comes in a ton of colors and is surprisingly soft! The pattern calls for 20 colors in total, 19 bright shades for the squares and white as the connector color. The original pattern creates a 40x69" throw blanket, but my dear sis has requested a King size throw blanket measuring 90x100." Instead of the 135 squares that the pattern calls for, I am making 440. Within the pattern color diagram the 19 main yarn colors create 38 rainbow square color combinations, therefore a King size bedspread will require approximately 11-12 squares of each color. So far I'm at 96 squares and I have plenty more to go! To cut costs I am ordering a few colors a month and working though them completely. This method also makes sure I don't get too overwhelmed with more yarn than I can reasonably use. To prepare myself for the endless blanket piecing that I will have before me this Summer, I'm making lots of granny square purses to practice the technique. So far I'm really enjoying this project. I love seeing how all the different color combinations work up. I am finding something very relaxing and meditative about creating all these tiny rainbows. Even though it's a cluttery project with a million skeins of yarn and tons of bitty pieces every square feels like a finished project and that gives me a sense of completion.
I will be back soon with another fantastic wedding project that I can barely wait to share with you! -Ashley
